letters from a girl w/o health insurance

I’m overwhelmed. I worry that I’m doing everything wrong. That I’m going to regret the decisions I’m making now. I am seriously banking on the revolution. Why would I need to find a high-paying job with healthcare benefits if the revolt of many demanding a universal basic income, wealth redistribution, and state-provided healthcare is moments away?

I feel in my heart that this is where we are headed and I want to be a leader in this call for change. A new political economy not focused on profit and exploitation but on fixing real, systemic problems (climate change, pollution/waste management, homelessness, education, addiction, mental illness, loneliness, food systems, etc.), which you can’t profit off of!! All my peers, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed strutting into the workforce, talk about how stupid their jobs are and how unfulfilled they feel. Meanwhile, we have all these REAL, ORDER- and LIFE-THREATENING problems that we largely ignore because BOTTOM LINE baby!!!! How do you make money off of rehabilitating someone struggling with addiction or homelessness? How do the shareholders benefit from rejiggering the entire energy grid so that shit isn’t actively killing the planet? You don’t!!!

You do those things because they are RIGHT and NECESSARY for the continuation of a society that is compassionate & just and that benefits ALL of us. Because taking care of each other and the planet is taking care of ourselves. Enough with the neoliberal individualist bullshit that brainwashes us into thinking me me ME. Let’s start taking care of each other. Let’s organize ourselves and demand change.
